Visit places like Paestum, Pompei, Hercolaneum, Ostia antica and Rome will be an unforgettable experience, out of time
Paestum is known as the “plain of the gods,” thanks to its well-preserved Greek temples, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Magnificent at night, it is even more beautiful during the day when the three temples – the Temple of Hera, the oldest, the Temple of Neptune, the largest, and the Temple of Cerere, actually dedicated to Athena – acquire different shades depending on the angle of the sun. Invaluable finds are exhibited in the Museo Archeologico Nazional.
Pompeii and Ercolano, the “resurrected cities,” are UNESCO World Heritage Sites thanks to the incredible value of the ruins and their excellent state of preservation. A visit to the ancient Forum means a visit to the Casa del Fauno, a monumental structure with rooms dedicated to several activities; the Sacrario dei Lari Pubblici, one of the most interesting buildings of Pompeii, probably devoted to the gods that were said to protect the city; and the Casa dei Vettii, with the interior decorated with precious paintings.
Ostia Antica is a large archaeological site, close to the modern town of Ostia, that is the location of the harbour city of ancient Rome, 15 miles (25 kilometres) southwest of Rome. “Ostia” (plur. of “ostium”) is a derivation of “os”, the Latin word for “mouth”. At the mouth of the River Tiber, Ostia was Rome’s seaport, but due to silting the site now lies 3 kilometres (2 miles) from the sea.[2] The site is noted for the excellent preservation of its ancient buildings, magnificent frescoes and impressive mosaics.
